The 6591 starter motor is defined by its 12-tooth pinion and common geometry such as 46 mm pinion OD and 89 mm engagement. A 10T unit can look similar but is not interchangeable—wrong tooth count often leads to grinding or no engagement.
Not recommended. Even if both are 28MT 24V starter motors, the tooth count difference alone can prevent proper meshing. Always match 6591 / 12T first, then confirm OD and engagement.
Grinding is usually caused by wrong tooth count (10T vs 12T), incorrect engagement depth, or a worn ring gear. On 6591 applications, tooth mismatch is the most frequent cause of repeat grinding complaints.
The 46 mm pinion OD helps confirm the correct drive geometry. If a buyer installs a 12T pinion with different OD, engagement behavior can change and cause abnormal noise or wear.
The 89 mm engagement relates to how far the pinion travels to meet the ring gear. Incorrect engagement can cause partial contact, noisy starts, or accelerated flywheel wear.
Clicking often indicates the solenoid is actuating, but the starter lacks current due to battery weakness, voltage drop, or poor grounds—common in 24V systems using two batteries in series.
In cold climates, voltage drop increases and battery output decreases. A healthy 6591 24V starter may still crank slowly if one battery in the 24V pair is weak or connections are corroded.
Salt air can corrode terminals and grounds, increasing resistance. Many "starter failures" reported in coastal regions are actually wiring/grounding issues, not motor defects.
A 4-terminal solenoid may support specific control wiring. If a harness expects a different terminal layout, the engine may not crank or may require rewiring—confirm terminal layout by photo before shipping.
Provide the 6591 reference, plus photos of the mounting face, 12T pinion, and 4-terminal solenoid. If possible, confirm 46 mm OD and 89 mm engagement.
